Educational Resources

KKI works with a number of primary schools in what is one of the poorest provinces of Kenya. HIV/Aids has ravaged this part of Kenya and many children are partial or complete orphans.

Stationery

Schools often have few educational resources and need assistance to purchase textbooks and teaching aids. Some students lack writing materials such as pads and pens and often cannot afford the necessary textbooks.

Uniforms

In Kenya if a student doesn’t have a school uniform they may be sent home. Many families are extremely poor and cannot afford this expense but KKI has been able to help. When funds are available KKI has arranged for children from the poorest families to obtain a school uniform.

In this remote area shops do not sell uniforms. A tailor must be engaged to obtain suitable material, measure the child and make the uniform. Many children have received a school uniform and remained at school because of the generosity of our donors.

Classrooms

In some schools when there are not enough classrooms, lessons are held outdoors, under the shade of a tree. In many schools more classrooms need to be built while in others classrooms are incomplete, sometimes lacking windows and doors.

Latrines

The health and hygiene of students is a high priority. Hand washing before meals and after visiting the latrines is compulsory. However there are often insufficient latrines for all students. More latrines are needed.

Teacher Housing

Primary Schools are located far from the nearest town and many teachers lack motorized transport. As a result some teachers must reside at school. The facilities are extremely rudimentary so wives and families usually remain in their hometown, only seeing their partners infrequently.

The commitment of teachers to live away from their families, in order to serve the pupils, is outstanding. Our long-term goal is to improve teacher’s accommodation and living standards, so that their families will feel comfortable to join them.
